I have lived in North Carolina for almost 8 years now and I have watched the city of Durham literally boom right before my eyes. Inspired by the rich history of the area, including the native american presence, tobacco mills, and the civil rights movement, Durham has been revitalized as a city full of personality and an energy you can only understand by experiencing it first hand. One my favorite things about Durham is how the city and it’s people embrace the history and use that to expand, develop and create. This city is home to world-renowned restaurants, breweries, hotels, arts, culture, sports, educations and more! I can’t wait to see what this city continues to come up with!
Recently we had the opportunity to spend a weekend in this amazing city. While a weekend is definitely not enough time to see everything this city has to offer, here are some of our favorite, can’t miss, spots that you definitely have to hit!
Where to Stay
One of my favorite hotels in Durham is The Durham Hotel. This beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of downtown not only has amazing food but also has a rooftop bar! Even if you aren’t staying in the hotel, you can take the elevator up to the rooftop to enjoy a drink and stunning views of the city. This hotel was voted one of the Best New Hotels in the South this year by CNN and it definitely does not disappoint!
Where to Eat
Y’all, there aren’t enough meals in a weekend to try all the delicious food the Durham has to offer. Durham was named Tastiest Town in the South by Southern Living and America’s Foodiest Small Town by Bonappetit! If you only do one thing when you visit Durham, you have to eat and drink your way through the city! So many restaurants have received top awards from seafood to pizza to tapas and more! There really is a delicious something for everyone!
Breakfast is probably my favorite meal of the day and I usually eat it more than once when I get to visit Durham because there is just so many places to choose from. True Flavors (in South Durham) and Dame’s Chicken and Waffles (in Downtown) are constantly pulling at my
heartstrings stomach for best chicken and waffles! Rise has the absolute best donuts you have ever tasted and Scratch has amazing coffee, pastries and pies!
Also try: Elmo’s Diner
One of our favorite family friendly restaurants for lunch or dinner is Tyler’s Taproom in the American Tobacco Campus. With an extensive list of craft beers on draft and great outdoor seating it is the perfect spot to grab lunch before walking across the street to the Durham Bulls stadium for a baseball game! I personally recommend the fried pickles and the fish tacos!
If you happen to visit Durham on a weekend when there is a food truck rodeo, you absolutely have to go! We love Durham food trucks so much we even had them cater our wedding! Make sure you stop by Cockadoodle Moo and Mac-Ur-Roni!
What to Do
There are so many family-friendly activities to choose from when you visit Durham. During our weekend there we spent some time at the beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens. These gardens are huge and immaculately maintained! There is plenty of space for kids to run around as well as quiet places to sit and people watch if you want to take a break from strolling through the gardens. Duke Gardens is part of the Duke campus so it is also convenient to then pop on over to the Duke chapel to take a look around. It is a truly gorgeous building that you will not want to miss!
After visiting the Duke Gardens and Duke Chapel, we headed over to the American Tobacco Campus for lunch. After lunch, we walked around the campus a bit, enjoying the huge water feature, hammocks and big grassy areas. Then we walked across the street for a Durham Bulls game! I’m not normally someone who can sit through an entire baseball game but the staff makes each inning fun and interactive, plus the stadium has it’s own brewery! Make sure you stay until the Durham Bulls Ground Crew does their performance!
Another great family attraction in Durham is the Museum of Life & Sciences. From water, mist, and space to outdoor treehouses, animals and an amazing butterfly garden, you could easily spend an entire day there! It really is fun for all ages!
A weekend really isn’t enough to experience all that Durham has to offer and we will definitely be back to explore more! Make sure that you check out the video of our trip and visit the Durham Convention Bureau’s website to plan your trip to Durham today!
