Lately, I’ve been really disappointed with the lack of compassion we as individuals show to our fellow human beings. This is something I think we all need to be reminded of sometimes.
You are always so quick to judge someone for their weight or their life choices or for one thing they’ve said with no knowledge of how they got to that point in their life or why they chose or said what they did. It makes me sad to think that you heart is so hardened and every day I pray for God to soften it.
Showing compassion for someone doesn’t mean you agree with the choices they’ve made, it just means that you acknowledge we are all different and no one except that individual can ever understand the reasons they make the choices they do. It doesn’t mean that you have to like them or think they are a good person but simply that you respect that they are a person – that they are a human being made by God for a purpose. Who through their choices and the choices of others has created a difficult situation – whether it be struggling with their weight, struggling with addiction, being so self-conscious that they have to put others down, or making one bad decision that ruined the rest of their life.
God teaches us to take care of those people by showing them compassion, not talking shit about them or making fun of them, even if they don’t know you are doing it. Those people suffer enough internal turmoil without the knowledge that people are harshly judging them. We can’t control our thoughts but we can control if and how we express them.
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
Matthew 25:41-45
I challenge you all to be aware of how you treat others regardless of how they treat you or of the choices they’ve made. I challenge you to show compassion.
